From Dark to Light: Great Room Redo in Marshall Park Great Room Remodel

This 2008 Portland, Oregon home in the Marshall Park neighborhood desperately needed some lightening up in the Great Room. The Dining Room had three giant black pendants that, to me, looked like toilet plungers. :-) And they were too heavy for the space. The challenge was to find a light fixture that went with the fairly dramatic existing fixtures in the other two areas.

The fireplace was a complete overhaul and by adding a hearth, we also got some extra seating. Switching to a gas insert means they’ll use the linear fireplace a lot more often. Only a few pieces of furniture were replaced. The family of three (plus Grandma in the darling basement apartment) was in dire need of a sectional. We went with leather to keep things low maintenance for the couple’s 5 year-old son.

We also added leather bar stools, which were a bit of a splurge, but so worth it. The kitchen cabinets were in great shape so we had them painted in a creamy bright white for the uppers and a dark slate blue for the lowers. We added new cabinet hardware and a faucet in oil-rubbed bronze. A new backsplash and white quartz countertop for just the island (we found a remnant!) helped to lighten the dark Kitchen.
