Gold + Glam Kitchen in the Clinton Neighborhood Kitchen Remodel

This Portland, Oregon home was built in 1912 so to pull off a major update that was fresh and current meant respecting the original features of the home including its dark wood trim. At my encouragement, my clients decided that we would keep the dark wood trim even though they strongly desired a light and bright kitchen with a gray and white palette. My clients own a chain of high fashion clothing boutiques and also have a swanky condo in Los Angeles. I drew upon this for inspiration and we decided our accents would be in gold and marble.
The kitchen in its original state had many challenges. The butcher block island was on the small side and yet, was still too big for the kitchen. My clients wanted what an island was great for; conversation, eating meals, or to help with meal preparation. The kitchen had a very small breakfast nook and we converted this area to usable kitchen space with a peninsula to serve as the “island” and a desk area for paying bills and working on laptops.
Another challenge was where the refrigerator was located. It was blocking the openness of the space as well as sticking out into the room. We moved it to another location and opened up the kitchen as a result. My favorite outcome came from the challenge of how to make the doggy door area look attractive, but also be functional. We settled on integrating marble tile planks as the transition into the new wood floors. I like so many elements of this kitchen remodel, but that’s far and away my favorite. To make sense of the marble flooring, we installed a marble herringbone backsplash for the coffee station.
It’s not easy to pull off a gray and white kitchen with gold and marble accents, while preserving the heavy dark wood trim, but I think we did it!
